Texas Transitional Casework Initiative (TTCI):
Two months after Hurricane Ike hit the Southeast Texas coast, over 300 households were still living in an emergency American Red Cross shelter on Galveston Island. In November, 2008, this shelter transitioned to the State of Texas, run by its partner, Baptist Child and Family Services. Through partnerships with GRACE Community Services and LINC-Houston, LSSDR provided disaster casework to 268 families, connecting them to temporary or permanent housing so that they could move out of the emergency shelter. In collaboration with BCFS, FEMA, HUD, the State and local social service agencies, LSSDR placed families in local hotels and apartments, helped many relocate temporarily off of Galveston Island, and helped others purchase bus tickets to relocate with family in other parts of the state and country.
Recovery for Ike Survivors Enterprise (RISE):
Through a $31 million grant from FEMA, administered through the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), RISE was a disaster case management program designed to provide help, support and advocacy for survivors of Hurricane Ike as they recovered from the disaster. RISE was a disaster case management consortium created and managed by LSSDR, with ten local partner organizations[1] providing direct disaster case management services to Hurricane Ike Survivors in a 16 county region of Southeast Texas.[2] From May 2009 through April 2011, RISE case managers worked in partnership with over 8,100 Hurricane Ike survivor households to assess their disaster-related needs, develop long-term recovery plans, and connect them to available resources to meet their disaster-related needs. Over that two-year period, RISE connected Ike survivors to nearly $30 million in services to assist them in their recovery from the disaster.
